One industry that is growing by leaps and bounds is the auditing and accounting industry. There are many great jobs available for people in this career field who have the appropriate educations. If you were to become an accountant, you would perform tasks such as keeping public records, making sure that taxes are filed appropriately, and helping a business to maximize their production. Whether you choose to work for the state government, federal government, for a business, or even for yourself, this kind of a career can be very rewarding.

Careers Available

The auditing and accounting field is a broad one, and there are many different careers that are available. First of all, there are public accounts who work for a variety of different people at the same time. You can either work with an accounting firm, or you can work on your own and enjoy the diversity of working with many different clients. You may also find yourself interested in a career in forensic accounting, which works with law enforcement agencies to uncover fraud and other crimes relating to money.

Another great career choice in this field is to become a management accountant. While this may take some years of hard work, it can be very rewarding. This type of accountant basically works with the rest of a management or executive team to help deal with various aspects of a business including planning, budgeting, and maximizing production levels within the company

There are many openings available for government accountants and auditors as well. Some of these types of positions may be working for the IRS and dealing with various aspects of taxes and even tax fraud. Other government positions may involve working with state or local governments to ensure that spending is done appropriately.

Preparation Needed

If you want to have a career in any portion of the auditing or accounting field, more than likely you are going to need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Most places will require that you have at least 24 hours of your studies devoted to accounting classes as well. There are many other businesses and firms that will actually require that you have a Master’s degree in either business or accounting.

Many accountants go on to get their CPA license from the state that they want to work in as well, which is very valuable. Most states will require that you have at least a bachelor’s degree if you want to get your CPA, and many will require you to have even more hours than it takes to get a bachelor’s degree. States have individual requirements, so if you are interesting in becoming a CPA it is usually a good idea to check into the requirements in your specific state.

Expected Wages

Becoming an accountant or auditor can provide you with great wages, especially if you do very well in school. As a general rule, most accountants will make between $30,000 and $80,000 each year. Most people who are just starting out usually make just under the $30,000 amount; however, the grades earned during school does seem to have a positive impact on how much you make when you are just out of school. Accountants who are serious about their jobs and work hard may make even more than $80,000 each year, with some even making up to $200,000 and better when they get into senior management positions. If you are willing to work hard, you can definitely make a great deal of money with this type of a job.

Companies to Consider

There are many different companies, both in the United States and Canada that are looking for qualified accountants and auditors to work for them. One very well known company in the United States that hires accountants and offers great pay and benefits is Oracle. They have various accounting positions, and they offer excellent health benefits, retirement benefits, and a great vacation plan. Another great U.S. based company that offers great jobs and competitive pay and benefits is Robert Half Management Resources. If you are looking for jobs in Canada, a couple great companies to consider include the National Bank of Canada and Ceridian Canada.

Security audits help organizations find weaknesses in
their security. Security auditors do this by collecting and analyzing
data about an organization’s hardware, software and security policies.
The audits point out vulnerabilities in the network and suggest ways to
eliminate these vulnerabilities. With what they learn from the audits,
organizations can improve their security and protect the
confidentiality, integrity, and availability of their digital
information. For that reason, security audits are a vital part of
organizational management.

However, security auditing can cause
problems when not performed well. Security audits can interrupt the
routine of the organization. They can become overly annoying,
expensive, and disruptive. When performed poorly, the problems of
security auditing can negate the benefits.

Although poorly performed security audits can cause problems, these security audits are too crucial to simply not perform.

To
ensure the value of security auditing, you need to avoid any negative
side-affects of your audits. You have to make sure that your security
auditing disrupts day-to-day business as little as possible. You want
to ensure that the audits do not get in the way of any personnel. Make
sure that everyone can do their job as normal as possible. When
installing and running computer auditing software, make sure that the
software does not use excessive computer resources and that it does not
slow down the network in any way. Additionally, you want to keep costs
down, so avoid needless expenses.

Using quality software to
assist and/or perform security audits can greatly help keep the audits
as non-disruptive as possible. Security auditing software can often run
in the background, so that users of the network may not even notice.
Security auditing software can collect security data as well as
organize and analyze the data.

When selecting what software to
use, read customer reviews. Look for comments about the software’s
level of disruptiveness. Even software can disrupt business; it can
hinder the ability of other essential software programs as well as the
activity of personnel. Namely, you want to make sure the auditing
software will not overload the network’s capacity for data transfer.

Also,
you need to make sure the security software is secure itself. Both
security auditing software and human auditors access loads of data
about the organization that they audit. They have large amounts of
security clearances to perform their job. As a result, it is of grave
importance to ensure that they can be trusted to keep the data secure.
In analogy, you would not hire a security guard who steals. Ironically,
poorly designed security auditing software may create more access
points for hackers and open your network up to attacks. The best way to
determine whether or not a particular software program or auditing
company will open you up to attack is to check reviews of previous
users of the software or previous clients of the company.

When
performed correctly, security auditing will give you the needed
information and advice to repair any holes in your organization’s
computer security. Perform these audits with care to avoid any
unnecessary problems.

Before you can increase productivity and improve your
company’s efficiency, you must audit your team’s output. Not just the
executive team, but the teams in all your business units.

This is
a lot more difficult than you might consider, you see middle managers
that run these business units consider them their domain. They thus
have procedures in place that work for them that they have designed.

They
do not wish to have anyone come in and tell them how to run things. The
idea of a process productivity audits seems to say; “we do not trust
the way you are running things and so we are going to come in and show
you a better way, because you are not smart enough to figure this out,”
and thus, you can see why this does not sit well with them.

Further,
these middle managers turn towards protectionism to put a fortress
around their fiefdom. Worse, in all this misunderstanding most of the
inefficiencies exist not because of the middle manager, but due to many
years of their bosses telling them what to do, and how to do it,
basically micro-managing every aspect.

It is for this reason that
any efficiency auditing must be met with initial meetings asking for
suggestions from the middle managers and look at their lists of ideas
and potential process innovations first. Long before any
recommendations are rendered from upper management.

Meanwhile,
the efficiency auditing team must also get input from the underlings of
the middle manager, so they do not feel slighted by any new policies
that come down the pipeline. Please consider all this.

Most people are shocked these days when they open their utility bill. By auditing your home, you can turn a monstrous utility bill into a minor annoyance.

Home Energy Audit

It happens every month. You pick up the mail and see an envelope from the utility company. Oh, the agony! Should I open it now and ruin the day or just wait. An energy audit can make the pain of getting your utility bill go away or at least become a dull ache.

Unlike a tax audit, you can conduct an energy audit by yourself. Simply walking through your home and paying close attention to energy issues can really pay off. Let’s take a look at some obvious problems that can save you a bundle.

The number one energy waster is a leak. Much like a leak in the tire of a care, even one leak from the interior to exterior of the home can raise your utility bill by as much as 30 percent. The most common area you will find such leaks are windows and doors.

Windows and doors are undisputedly the area where most air leaks occurs. The first issues is whether air is actually leaking out through the framing of windows or the area around the bottom of the door. You can typically tell this by feeling for a notable temperature difference in these areas. If is significantly cooler, you have a leak.

As people in cold climates know, having sealed windows is simply not enough to control heating costs in the winter. Most windows on homes are designed for year around use, which makes them huge energy wasters in the winter. Going with energy-efficient windows can make a huge difference in keeping the heat in and the cold out.

If you’ve walked through your home and haven’t found any significant problems with your windows and doors, you may still have one. To really give your home an efficiency test, you can hire contractors to perform a pressurization test. The test essentially raises the pressure in your home and looks for leaks.

Fixing any leaks you find will depend entirely upon the nature of the problem. Some fixes only require additional caulking or insulation while others are unique. Regardless, making your home more energy efficient will significantly cut your utility bill this year and for years to come.

Accounting auditing careers are just one of many
career choices within the accounting field. Auditors perform a variety
of tasks that are integral to any business’ finances. They examine and
verify the accounting of finances in a business. Accounting auditors
are in demand right now and are expected to experience a faster than
normal growth for employment according to the Bureau of Labor. If
you’re considering a career in accounting then working as an auditor
may be a choice for you.

What is an Auditor?

An
auditor is an accountant who deals primarily with the examining and
verifying financial statements. Auditors look closely at these
statements to ensure things “add up.” If there are errors or
inaccuracies the auditor determines why these errors exist. They also
develop course of action to prevent these errors from happening again.

Auditors
do more than just scrutinize an organization’s financial statements.
They also examine any bills the organization may have ensuring accuracy
in credits and debits. If any errors exist they correct them.

IRS and Government Auditors

IRS
and Government accounting auditors are different from business auditors
in that they examine things purely from a tax perspective. When a
business or individual’s tax return is suspect, auditors are
responsible for conducting a tax audit on the business or individual to
examine its accuracy. For instance, if a business is claiming a lot of
expenses, the IRS auditor will check to see if the expenses meet the
criteria put forth in the tax code. If not, the business could face
penalties. Tax auditors have a bad reputation that is really
undeserved. They keep people honest and ensure the government is not
getting cheated out of its tax dollars. The tax auditor job is one of
the best accounting auditing careers around despite the bad talk.

Technology Driven

Twenty
years ago, auditors worked primarily on paper, but nowadays, they
mainly work with computers. Most financial statements are now
computerized and as such, the auditor must be comfortable working with
computers and (sometimes) complicated accounting programs. That’s why
many accountant auditors are opting for degrees that not only emphasize
accounting, but also using the computer.

Education Required

Most
accounting auditing careers require a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Some states require certification too it all depends on the state in
which you’re seeking employment. Opportunities are best for those who
have a Master’s degree and certification.

Salary

The
average salary for auditors, according to the Bureau of Labor, is
around $54,000 a year. Senior auditors may make upwards of $80,000 a
year, while those just starting out will make roughly $35,000 a year.
Once you get a couple years of experience as an auditor, you can expect
your salary to greatly increase.

Despite the bad reputation tax
auditors get, accounting auditing careers are really good jobs for
people interested in dealing with finances and accounting. If you are
interested in becoming an auditor, you should not let the opinions of
some hold you back from doing something that is right for you.

In addition, the IRS is stepping up its examinations of
traditional pensions, 401(k)s and profit-sharing plans.

A few
years ago, when I spoke at the national convention of the American
participate in “listed transactions” are required to report them to the
IRS or face substantial penalties ($100,000 in the case of individuals,
and $200,000 in the case of entities). In addition, “material advisors”
to these plans are required to maintain certain records and turn them
over to the IRS on demand.

When I addressed the 2005 annual
convention of the National Society of Public Accountants, the IRS spoke
about Circular 230. My impression was that if an accountant signed a
tax return that disclosed involvement in a listed and/or abusive tax
transaction, there could be Circular 230 implications.

Most
accountants are not familiar with 412(i) plans. They are a type of
defined-benefit pension plan that allows a large contribution. The
funding vehicles are usually fixed annuities and fixed life insurance.
They are traditionally sold by life insurance professionals and
financial planners. However, in recent years, they have gained in
popularity.

Given the substantial taxes and penalties that may be
assessed if the IRS concludes that a 412(i) plan has not been properly
structured or administered,
The IRS is aiming to catch companies that are cheating their workers or the government.

especially if it concludes that the plan is a listed transaction, it is important that the taxpayer know the rules.

The
accountant should also be aware of them. The fact that a plan is being
sold by an insurance company does not make it safer. Recently the IRS
has taken action against plans sold by insurance companies.

Considering a career in accounting? You have several
choices you can look at before making a decision as to which way you
might decide to tread. There are several fields you can consider with
auditing probably being the most prestigious of all. Even though you
could look at bookkeeping, accounts receivable, and payable and several
other area you could try. However auditing is probably the most visible.

If
you choose the auditing field, you can do a lot to help big companies
keeping all the stuff that goes on in proper order. However you can
become a government auditior for the IRS, or other government areas. If
you become a government auditor you have got to learn to shed the
hatred and resentment that comes with especially the IRS area of
auditing.

The increase in auditing jobs will grow a huge amount
in coming years. So it might a better field to be involved with. If
your taste excludes the Government and IRS auditing positions. Still
most all Companies must have certified Audits on a regular basis. The
larger companies must have a full time in house auditors. So as you can
see the field is not shy on needed personnel.

Most Auditors are
advanced as well as full fledge accountants. This is they way you would
move up your companies ladder by doing a superb job in the field you
start working in, then as positions higher open up, you are able to
move up if you are doing a super nice job in your present position.

If
you are an auditor, you main job consists of examining and verifying
all the corroborating statements. Examining all the financial
statements, making sure everything adds up as well as balances. When
the figures do not balance, there has to be a reason why? It is the
auditors job to find out why not and what must be done to prevent
future mistakes from happening.

If you are an auditor, you have
to be constantly on the lookout for the well being of your company tax
records. Also to be able to legally avoid tax liability for the
company. However if you are an auditor for the government, you are
constantly searching for areas and steps that companies and individuals
have taken to avoid taxes, some legal and some illegal. When tax
returns are filed that appear to be erroneous you have to scrutinize
them in every area. It is your job as a government auditor to make sure
that all taxes due are paid and to leave no loopholes open that should
not be.

As many businesses at times file tax returns with a lot
more expenses than a company of that nature should have. Then its time
for the auditor to determine, if these expenses are correct and proper.
If these expenses and receipts do not meet the tax code criteria, the
companies can face harsh penalties and fines. Thus the reason that most
government auditors are disliked to the point of being hated and are
given very bad reputations. It cannot be avoided. You have no choice
but to do your job properly.

You will discover that being a
government auditor is probably one of the top career positions you can
hold. When you are in this position it is your responsibility to
ascertain that people file tax returns properly and responsibly in
order to avoid cheating the tax man.

An auditor must be able to
decipher the different technologies being used by different companies
these days. No more sitting all day crunching numbers by hand, you must
be trained on all the latest machines and technology being used by the
various companies you will come into contact with on a daily basis. The
government auditor must always be prepared to present his findings in
court cases. There can be no guessing nor supposing when this happens.
Thus the reason for the government auditors higher pay.

In the
event you decide you might like being a company auditor you will need
at least a bachelor of science degree in accounting. If you proceed on
and get your Masters Degree there will be still considerably more job
opportunities that are open to you. In a lot of cases you will need to
be certified, in some states no certification is required, depends on
where your located, call them and find out what you will need.

If
you are young and just out of college you can count on starting out in
the $35000 range, as you gain more experience you can move up a good
bit. Most company Auditors are in the neighborhood of 50 to $60000 per
year. A lot of the Auditors especially the Senior auditors are earning
as much as $80 thousand per year. So as you can see being an Auditor is
not a lowly paid career. Some earn big money. Do not worry about the
starting salaries, it is the ending ones that really count.

Despite
the fact that most of the government auditors have poor reputations, if
you believe it is something you are cut for. If you love crunching the
numbers. You know you will have a good job and career. Why would you
really care what others think and say as long as you do the best job
you can possibly do. Do your job properly and you will be rewarded
properly this is the main reason for choosing an accountancy career to
begin with.
