Before you can do anything, you must create a demo that is going to impress the decision makers with record companies. If you want to sound like a professional, you are going to have to use a professional studio and producer. This is all going to cost money, but you can sometimes share time or work out a deal to come in off hours. Even if you find that it takes you longer than you want, it is much better to have a complete product than something that sounds like it was put together in a basement.

The music is only one portion of the demo as you still need to make sure that the packaging is just as impressive as what is inside. You would be surprised at how many musicians do nothing more than throw something on a CD and stick it in a plain case to send off. Doing something like this screams that you don’t really care and cannot be taken seriously.

The next piece of the puzzle is your press kit. If you are not familiar with them, it should include a nice headshot, a brief bio and some interesting facts about your musical career. If you have performed publicly or served as a session musician on someone else’s album, do not be shy about including it at this point. The more you have about your experiences, the better off you are going to be.

The next step is to do some research on labels to find out exactly who is interested in signing young classical talent and who is reputable. There are a lot of small labels out there that specialize in entry level talent and then hand it off to bigger labels if it starts to take off. This is all part of the business, but you want to make sure that these labels are legitimate and not just trying to swindle you.

Once you know who you want to send your demo to, you are going to have to reach out to them and make sure that they are willing to accept your tape. Most companies will not take anything that is unsolicited and you will be wasting time and money by sending things out this way. It may work differently in the movies, but this is real life and this is how you have to go about it.

There is quite a bit of work in trying to get a classical music record deal, but anything worth having is worth putting some effort into. If you are truly talented, all of the hard work you put into creating a sellable product (you and your music) will come to fruition in the way of a signed contract. As promised here’s another mini guitar lesson to give you a help in hand in your guitar playing.

This week I have a nice little chord change for you that crops up in many, many songs. You’ll find it’s really effective but does assume you have some understanding of playing the guitar. If you find it a little too much there’s no need to panic as my full course (due to be released shortly) covers every aspect from an absolute beginner through to monster guitar players.

It’s a great idea to keep this tip for future reference. Once you reach a level to be able to play this phrase simply pull it out of your bag of tricks you’ll be building up over time.

Ok, give this a whirl:

We’ll start by playing an ‘A Major’ chord in the open position, using your 1st, 2nd and 3rd finger play one bar all downstrokes and on the beat.

Next lift off your 3rd finger to reveal the open B string (this chord is called Asus2) and play one bar.

Next using your 4th finger hold down the B string at the 3rd fret (1st and 2nd finger remain unchanged at the second fret throughout this piece), play one bar (Chord is called Asus4) and finish off by playing one bar of A Major to complete this four bar sequence.

Following on from above before I sign off for this week let’s have a look at a cool little trick you can use to create cool sounding chords easily by using open strings within chords.

Ok follow me… We are going to play an A major (A) chord with a difference… The fingerings are: 4th string 7th fret with your 3rd finger….3rd string 6th fret 2nd finger and 2nd string 5th fret 1st finger and 1st string is played open this chord is an A major (A). OK now strum one bar….

Now move the whole chord shape down the neck two frets keeping the 1st string open and play one bar (G6)…

Now play a Dsus2 chord ..Fingering: 4th string open -3rd string 2nd fret first finger – 2nd string 3rd fret 3rd finger and again 1st string open, play one bar.

To finish off we now play an A Major chord in the open position… 5th string open… 4th,3rd and 2nd string are played at the second fret with fingers 1,2,3 and the 1st string is …you guessed it open.

For a killer chord progression that sounds great on its own, play one or two bars of each chord over and over. It’s great to solo over and fantastic for writing your own songs.

K-Fed on the “One Tree Hill” as a Rock Star

Most of their lyrical content is derived from Viking history and Norse mythology.

2004s Fate of Norns and 2006s With Oden On Our Side earned the band considerable popularity all over the world, including North America where they have toured several times as a headline act.

Amon Amarth recently extended their deal with Metal Blade records and released their latest album in September 2008 called ‘Twilight of the Thunder God’. The album continues their thematic examination of their Viking ancestors, and has become their biggest seller to date.

01. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” – This is a brilliant way to start the album and it really sets the mood for the entire thing. The “concept” of the album is really quite loose, without this song there is no concept album! One thing I really dig about this song is the crazy horns section. Can you imagine many “rock bands” of today having the imagination to include something like that in their song?

02. “With a Little Help from my Friends” – The perfect song for Ringo Starr to sing. John Lennon & Paul McCartney wrote this song together specifically for Ringo to sing which I think makes the great lyrics all that much greater (think of them in that context.)

03. “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” – Now that the original mono version is available easily (with the release of The Beatles in Mono Box Set) it’s great to be able to hear what this album sounds like in mono (how it was “meant to be heard” originally.) And the heavy vocal effects on this song is probably one of the more interesting things about the mono mixes for me.

04. “Getting Better” – This may just be the song I most commonly think of when I think of the Sgt. Pepper album. I’m not quite sure why that’s the case, but it is! To me this song defines the spirit of the album very well.

05. “Fixing a Hole” – I love this kind of more subtle psychedelia. And yes, this is a very psychedelic song. And how about those lyrics? Anyone who doesn’t think McCartney could write lyrics should pay close attention to these.

06. “She’s Leaving Home” – Another great reason to get The Beatles in Mono Box Set. This song sounds faster and higher (by a semitone) in the mono version. It’s a treat to hear!

07. “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” – I think my favorite part of this song is the cut up tape section where it sounds like sort of insane random carnival music.

08. “Within You Without You” – Speaking of “far out” how about we go all the way to India? Some people don’t like this song because it doesn’t fit with their preconceived notions of what music is supposed to sound like. To me this song is brilliant because of that very reason. We shouldn’t limit ourselves.

09. “When I’m 64″ – Some people don’t seem to get how “tongue in cheek” this song is. McCartney loved to mess around with different musical styles in this way. In fact I think Ween sort of ripped off their whole shtick from Paul McCartney. Listen to McCartney’s “fruity” songs (as George Harrison called them sometimes) from the perspective of Ween doing them and I think maybe they’ll click.

10. “Lovely Rita” – I definitely enjoy this song as well but I must say that I do think tracks #10 and #11 are the least interesting tracks on the album.

11. “Good Morning Good Morning” – There’s some interesting time changes in this one. I also love the Jimi Hendrix style guitar leads by Paul McCartney.

12. “Sgt. Pepper’s (Reprise)” – Rocks harder than the first version. I love how it ties the album together and it’s brilliant how this closing version is “looser” just like a band may be looser at the end of a real show. And that’s what the concept of this album was all about after all. The idea was that this album would “go on tour” rather than the band themselves.

13. “A Day in the Life” – In my opinion this is the best song ever written. An absolutely epic way to end the album.
