Yoga is a 6000-year-old form of exercise which not only disciplines the body but conditions the mind as well.

by Kim Archer

Yoga is a 6000-year-old form of exercise which not only disciplines the body but conditions the mind as well.

While the various exercises, called asanas, are the basic building blocks of yoga training, breath is its very essence. Some go so far as to say, “If you can breathe, you can do yoga.” One of the main goals of yoga is to teach you to still and quiet your mind through the use of your breath.

By practicing yoga on a regular basis, you get to know your breath intimately. Not only will you learn about proper breathing , which will soothe and relax you, but you will bring your postures to life through the use of your breath.

It is in our nature to let our minds drift into concerns of the future and the past. But our bodies are only alive in the present. Through the performance of yoga, you can learn how to focus your mind on your body and let go of all of your worries, all through proper breathing.

Yoga can help to prevent stress and disease by letting you do this – letting go of these harmful, stressful thoughts, even for a short time, restores your body and mind to a healthy balanced state. Focusing on the present is what brings about this benefit.

By practicing yoga, you will learn conscious breathing during yoga poses which will keep your mind alert and ever aware of your practice. You will learn how to draw your mind to the present moment – allowing you to leave off all other thoughts.

While there are a number of breathing exercises associated with yoga which will teach you how to release tension and balance your mind, as a start, try the following exercise.

* Lie or sit still in a comfortable position and be aware of your breathing.

* Still aware of your breath, inhale and exhale 4 counts each several times.

* Next, increase your inhalation and exhalations to 5 counts each.

* After several rounds of breathing in and out for five counts, increase to six counts. Be conscious of your body at all times and don’t tense up.

* Continue increasing your inhalations and exhalations all the way up to 9 counts. If you feel that this is causing you any stress, drop the count back down to a number that is comfortable for you.

* Keep bringing your mind back to your body to check to see if there is any tension anywhere. If there is, try to relax that part of your body.

* Whatever number of counts you reach, continue breathing with these long breaths for several rounds, then stop counting and breathe normally for 10 rounds.

What you should learn from this and any other yoga breathing exercise is to still your thoughts and relax your mind so that you are conscious of your body. Over time, you will gain control of your breathing and you will be able to draw on its power to calm yourself during stressful moments.

Ever since fitness videos became such a hit, people have been wanting to try it but eventually, most of them are not taking it seriously. Although this happens most of the time, maybe it’s time for them to choose the right program first before digging into fitness videos they could find in stores and ignore it right away. So, here are some tips on how to choose the right fitness video for you.

Basically, you have to know your body’s capacity first and maybe add a little more to it. Since you really don’t know your exact capabilities because you haven’t tried hard, adding a bit to it could actually boost more confidence within you. Sometimes, you might even be surprised to discover that you could surpass the usual exercises you did before. For instance, you want a basic indoor aerobic exercise like stationary bicycle when you actually could advance your level into kickboxing and punching bags.

Advancing your level won’t hurt. You have to decide if you could go on or back-off with the fitness video you chose and choose another. That’s why the internet comes in handy on these situations. You can search for these videos online and look for comments from people who already tried it. After all, you always want to keep up with your video instructor.

Cost also comes by when you plan to lose weight. Be sure to maximize your money and decide which video could really help you.

When you have a will on yourself that you really want to lose weight, you will be able to. Succeeding in what you want to do to improve does not happen in one snap. It is a process that you have to go through. If it doesn’t work, make it work and learn to discipline yourself.

These are only some factors you could use in finding the right fitness video for you. But having one at home will make a difference for yourself. Losing weight will be more admirable when you know you took the first step you need to be able to push through and have good results. And of course, it’s from your own sweat.

When I was in school, I worked out a couple times per week with a friend. Once, another friend named Jason joined us. And I do emphasize ONCE.

“I can’t stay motivated,” Jason said. “I can’t workout unless I listen to the soundtrack from Rocky.”

It was funny to hear. But then I started thinking to myself: So what?

If he needed to listen to Eye Of The Tiger or Hearts On Fire EVERY time he trained, then why not just listen to them every time?

If it works, go for it.

I work out in the morning. Always. And I usually recommend the same for everyone else. But if you find you can only get rolling in the evening ” go for it.

Some people can’t eat before a workout – I prefer not to. But maybe a little food helps you.

I also can’t stand a cold gym. Others love it. I like to wear heavier clothes when I workout, some prefer as little as possible.

The key idea is to do what works for YOU. Figure out what kind of atmosphere, schedule, and clothing helps you stay in shape as easily as possible.

And of course listen to some Gonna Fly Now too.

by Dave Richards

Meditation has been practiced for centuries as a means of relaxation and spiritual enlightenment. By controlling conscious thought the body can experience health-giving benefits and relaxation. There are many meditation techniques and practices in different parts of the world today.

There are many benefits of meditation one is that it calms the mind and reduces tension and stress. It also increases self confidence because meditation increases serotonin levels, which are the feel-good hormones. It has been shown to stabilize blood pressure, which decreases your risk for heart disease.

There are many types and styles of meditation. Meditation has been used for centuries in religious practices, and for medical reasons. Mantra is when you chant a regular repetition of specific sounds, to achieve a meditative state. Chakra is what is used to explore the seven chakras located along the spine. Transcendental is used for its state of rest to the body and mind.

There are different types of meditation which have similar aims but often quite different techniques. Each type uses a method to induce a meditative state, but the method may vary from one type to another. For example; Mantra meditation uses the repetition of a favorable sound. Trataka involves using a steady gaze at an object. Zen incorporates different seated positions to achieve the same end. Chakra meditation explores the seven chakras of the body.

Trataka is used to quiet the mind in this the mediator steadily gazes at a particular object such as a photo. The point is to clear the mind and relax the body. All of these meditations may have a different aspect to them, but the general goals are the same in each.

The goal of meditation is to focus and quiet your mind. Consistent practice is required to master the art of meditation and to start to see positive results, but first you need to know how to go about the process. You need to set aside a block of time each day for meditating. You will learn how long each session will need to be. Choose a time that is best for you where you will not have interruptions this will allow you to focus; this gives you the best results. If you see results you are more likely to stick to.

Set yourself up for success by preparing – take the phone off the hook, turn off TV and radio and settle into a comfortable position. You can sit on the floor or in a chair, but have your back straight to assist with correct breathing. Lean against something if you like. You can also lie down.

Once you are comfortable close your eyes or, if you find that difficult, focus on an object like a candle flame. Breathe slowly and deeply, more from your abdomen than your chest. Feel your belly rise and fall; your chest stays comparatively still. Inhale while you count 3, exhale while you count 6. Repeat this breathing and counting over and over. Practice this breathing exercise on a regular basis for wonderful relaxation. Consciously relax every muscle in your body, starting from your head and moving down to your toes. Focus your attention on your breathing and silence your mind.

by Le Vinson

This Yoga Techniques article is intended for beginners, no professional knowledge needed to understand this topic so why not give it a try?

The ancient art of yoga relies on a complex set of breathing techniques, physical postures and meditations to increase spirituality and promote good health. The practice of yoga techniques is incredibly wide and varied nowadays particularly in the West. The choice of certain yoga techniques over others comes down to personal choice, since every person has an individual way of judging physical and spiritual growth. The difference between the yoga techniques usually lies in the yoga positions, or, as they are called in the yoga lingo, the asanas. This is the factor that justifies the necessity for a yoga instructor to guide the apprentice through the various yoga techniques in the most correct of ways.

The ways to approach the yoga techniques differ, and some trainees choose to go to yoga classes and try different styles, while others search on the Internet to identify postures, health benefits and even risks. For yoga practice at home, DVDs and videos make the more cost-effective alternative, although it is not the safest.

There are five specific yoga techniques which are usually followed by yoga practitioners. These are: the proper posture, the proper joint movement, controlled breathing, meditation and total relaxation. The common belief among yoga practitioners is that these five techniques combined improve the health of the mind and body. You can perform yoga while sitting, standing or lying. Furthermore, there are different difficulty degrees in performing yoga techniques, and they have to be adapted to the level of yoga knowledge of the apprentice.

The five standards exemplified above represent the basis for more advanced yoga techniques performed by masters and gurus with a superior knowledge level. For example, Hong-Sau represents a technique that insists on the use of the latent powers of concentration with the purpose of overcoming the potential disturbing elements in the background by the extreme focusing on a particular set goal. Aum is another yoga technique; its aim is to expand one’s awareness beyond the usual human awareness. Nevertheless, these advanced yoga techniques can only be successfully performed by those who master the basic techniques and are ready to achieve an advanced focus.

Overall, yoga techniques of any kind significantly contribute to health improvement. Those who practice yoga consistently claim to have increased self-awareness, flexibility, overall body energy and the mental power.

Yoga Exercises is the topic of a series of articles that suppose to give you better knowledge about this topic.

by Bert Alderden

Yoga Exercises is the topic of a series of articles that suppose to give you better knowledge about this topic.

The benefits of yoga exercises for health improvement are widely known, and this is the main reason why so many westerners start to practice it. To begin with the basics, lots of people get to practice yoga out of the sheer desire to grow their spiritual side and get distracted from the very material grip of our reality. Yet, there are others for whom yoga exercises become a way to alleviate ailments or body disorders; this is the case of people who suffer from sleep problems and don’t manage to get a good night rest. How can yoga exercises help to treat insomnia? Yoga starts with relaxation, if you come to develop mind control and relax, the ability to fall asleep becomes a skill.

Among the yoga exercises that help induce a good night rest we should mention neck stretches, shoulder movements, complete muscle relaxation techniques and breath control. The health benefits of yoga are widely advertised and they usually represent the main attraction and trigger that makes people take up yoga classes in the first place. Some think they’ll get slimmer, others that they’ll grow muscular mass, and there are even some people who expect to increase their sexual performance by the practice of yoga exercises.

Nevertheless, this kind of perception of yoga exercises is very far from the origins of this art of body and spirit harmonious growth. Yoga requires inner as well as outer training although the latter is fully reflected and influenced by the former Thus, according to the original meaning of yoga exercises, the trainee that gets to discover the rich beauty of the inside will be free and at peace. Yoga exercises are just the path to something nobler than the immediate weight loss: spiritual freedom in its purest form.

Thus, the yoga exercises we practice in most of the sessions make an inferior level of the real yoga art. This doesn’t mean that all yoga practices follow this down-to-earth, immediately functional trend, but rather that it is more accessible for the average person to identify a purpose and a meaning in this so-called art before getting to reach superior states of self-awareness. Therefore, the necessity of a good trainer as well as a relevant objective in the practice of the yoga exercises allow people to stay on the right track thus preventing disillusionment as well as accidents.
