You are probably at the stage now where you have looked through numerous guides on how to write a dissertation at university. You may be confused over the number of different points of view that these guides provide and thus may be a little confused. You are probably then thinking, how do I actually structure my dissertation? Does the rationale come before or after the methodology? This short article will show you an accepted structure that colleges and universities will encourage you to use to complete your dissertation paper.

Dissertation Abstract – the abstract provides a synopsis of the whole research paper and will present the objectives and outcomes/conclusions of the research. You don’t need to write over 200 words for this part, but these 200 words should be concise and to the point.

Contents – will list the main parts of the dissertation, with subsections, and will have page numbers for these sections. You should aim to have the different areas of your work under different headings. Also, many students prefer to create a rough draft of the contents page as a structural plan to help them include everything in their research paper. This can help some students write more effectively and on topic.

Dissertation Introduction – you should think of this section as a ’setting the scene’ chapter, to introduce the topice and your dissertation as a research paper. Summarizing the conclusions and outcomes of the research itself will be a good idea, as well as providing a summary of the paper and what it contains. Some people will choose to treat the introduction section as a quick snapshot of their research travels. They will provide the introduction, information on what happened, and then a conclusion to the paper.

Literature Review – this chapter of your work will outline all of the previous research that is relevant to your research project. You will review these and construct an argument within to result in a hypothesis or research question. You should also concentrate on the most important points here, as this is the key area to bring in relevant content.

Methodology Chapter – this section needs to identify the different methods of collecting data and why you should and did choose them. You will specify the different methods that you have chosen for your topic and thus outline how you will collect empirical data for your study. This is the area when you substantiate your argument for using the different methods and allow your reader to understand why these different methods are relevant to the data collection processes in your research.

Data Analysis – here you present your empirical data collected and highlight the main issues which have emerged from your research. You will most probably use graphs, charts and diagrams to illustrate trends and analysis – you should not, however, draw any conclusions at this point. The way to write this section and structure is to show data gathered and set it out so that the data collected could be used independently of your conclusions.

Discussion – as the researcher of your dissertation, this section should be to identify the data that you have analyzed and present your main findings.

Conclusion – commonly though of as the ‘wrapping up’ of your paper, this section is a summary of the main points that you have covered in your research paper. You will need to analyze what your paper contains and then be able to communicate this clearly to the reader. You could also evaluate this actual conclusion too and make recommendations for further analysis or research.

Bibliography – all reference should be listed alphabetically, this doesnt matter whether you have quoted from them or not. You should include the authors name, title, place of publication, publisher and date when including any material in your bibliography.

Appendices – the appendices are a place where you can place extra information so that your dissertation does not become cluttered. It is a place to provide the reader a fuller picture of the information you are writing about, for example, a blank questionnaire that you used.

If you follow this simple design, then you should be able to put together a seamless dissertation thesis. You don’t want your reader to be reading a dissertation paper that is disjointed and that they won’t be able to read easily. You want to lead them on a journey and be able to provide them with a story about your research project. Also, you should make sure you have your work checked by a professional proofreader before you submit it.

by Nick Sanders

It has become regular practice to submit a dissertation report for completion of any degree. Dissertation work is the most important for scoring a good grade for any degree, and presentation, clarity and accuracy of the work are the keys to successful dissertation editing and writing.

Editing and revision of any written document is as important as writing the document itself; you will be unable to impress readers with your paper if it hasn’t been well edited.

When your dissertation is being reviewed by the marker, they will be looking for key patterns in your work and also if you have the ability to present your arguments in a clear and consistent way. You should, therefore, consider proofreading, editing and revision of your document to ensure that the research you present will be able to be read with ease.

Similar to when you read an article in a newspaper, your dissertation should be full of relevant information and edited to ensure the sections are well presented. It will also need to have important news at the start, moderate news in the middle, and news reviewing the ’stroy’ towards the end of the paper.

Similarly, editing a dissertation report is also important. Your report examiner is looking for your report to be full of information, but also a report that has been edited and is written and formatted in a defining manner, with important points being highlighted. Moreover, they expect your paper to be free from errors and your argument to flow. So a thorough revision of the report becomes important.

Think of a situation where you have wanted to write a word meaning we all and by mistake you write well, it changes the meaning of the whole sentence. Therefore, there is a need here for you to review your work.

If you choose not to check and review your paper, then you should be encouraged to at least proofread what you have written. As the reader progresses through your paper, they will become confused and annoyed over little mistakes.

Now, you may be wondering what steps you need to take to thoroughly edit and review your paper. The following few points will help you:

1. Edit – when you are editing your paper, you should consider: i. give yourself time to edit, you don’t want to be editing your paper only a few hours before it’s handed in. You should also edit the different chapters as you complete them, as this will allow you to fully understand the stages of your dissertation.

You should also consider the format and layout of your paper. If you do not correctly edit the format of the different chapters of your dissertation, then you could annoy your reader.

iii. You should highlight any important points in your paper, by spending extra time on their discussion and evaluation. You should also use an appropriate editing tool that will leve you will more option in editig your work, with MS word considered an optimal choice for many students.

2. Revision – When you are reviewing and revising your work, which you should consider giving a considerable amount of time to, you should review each section and chapter; but also review the paper as a whole.

b. Print off your work. It helps if you review your work on paper, than on the screen in front of you, as this allows you to concentrate more and its easier on your eyes. You will also find it easier to find more mistakes when reviewing your paper in this way.

If you follow these simple steps then your dissertation will become a lot easier to read by your supervisor and should help you gain those few extra marks that you deserve. You should consider allowing equal time for reviewing and proofreading/editing of your dissertation thesis.

Because of the effects of the recession in which we now find ourselves, lots of students believe they can not afford higher education.

by Daniel Z. Kane

Because of the effects of the recession in which we now find ourselves, lots of students believe they can not afford higher education.

Actually, nothing could be further from the truth.

First, virtually all colleges, universities, and professional schools, including those offering online degree programs, are making concerted efforts to be as affordable as possible. Some have voluntarily frozen costs and/or cut budgets. Others have tuition limits imposed by state law.

Because colleges are well aware of the financial difficulties students and their families are experiencing, most have redoubled their efforts to raise money for scholarships. And, for the most part, they have been highly successful.

Uncle Sam is also stepping up to the plate, with increases in loans and grants. For online college students, there is even more good news; they are now eligible for virtually all federal aid programs.

And, there is help from many states as well. Some offer achievement-based and/or financial-need based scholarships. And, some state colleges and universities offer in-state tuition to students from contiguous states and/or high-achieving out-of-staters.

Students and their families should also be aware that it is not uncommon for colleges and universities to offer no-interest tuition installment plans. Not only do these plans allow families to spread their costs into 7-8 payments, but they provide insurance which will cover a student’s tuition for up to four years if his or her parent passes away. And, the installment plan itself costs nothing.

Students should also take advantage of the many free scholarship search sites, and the help available in high school admissions and financial aid offices. There is no reason to give up on attending college, regardless of the health of the economy.

by Diane Palmer

A lot of people think that the most important reason to go to college is so that they can earn more money. This is certainly a good reason. If you get your college degree you will probably do better than someone who quits after high school. This is the common argument for higher education, but there are other things to consider when making your decision about continuing your education and getting a college degree.

No doubt, a college degree is a prerequisite for getting many well-paying jobs. But just “getting a job” is not enough. You have to earn that high salary by being a productive employee and your productivity will depend on the power of your intellect to handle whatever task is placed before you. Education’s true importance is to develop your mind so that you can perform well.

If you want to get your degree either on campus or online you will have to do well in exams. Often you will have to memorize information and then be able to give this information back on exam time. But what will happen a few months after the exam. Will you still be able to remember all of this information? You would probably fail your exams if you had to take them again at a later date.

Most likely, whoever is going to employ you will probably not be looking for someone who can merely recite memorized information, but will want someone with a “good head on his or her shoulders.” Should you continue your education and get a college degree, you will develop your thinking capacity and your creative capacity. This is the true value of higher education and is what would-be employers are really looking for.

It is not enough to know how to use your head and come up with great solutions. You also have to learn how to communicate and express your ideas. This is another great outcome of the process of higher education. As you work on your college degree, either on campus or through an online course, you will in the process of doing the exercises, improve your writing style and your capacity to explain and to convince others.

Finally there is one more skill that higher education can deliver to you. It will awaken a capacity to learn and a joy in learning. Your “education” does not end when you get a degree or leave school. If you enjoy learning, then this educative process can continue for the rest of your life, all you have to do is to get the knack of acquiring information from books, magazines, the mass media, the Internet and whatever other means of communication that will be invented in the near future.

Consider all of this and hopefully you will continue your higher education and get a college degree. It doesn’t matter whether you get it in a traditional college, on campus, or through an online degree. The important thing is to develop your thinking capacity with a good course of higher education.

by Ivy League Secrets

Here’s what no one is willing to tell you about your GPA and SAT score: at a certain point, THEY DON’T MATTER.

College admissions is a tough game – but there are rules to getting into the best schools like Princeton and Stanford. I worked in the Admissions Office of a Top 20 school for 3 years, so I’ve had plenty of experience figuring out what really matters for high school students.

With your GPA, class rank, and SAT, there are only 2 rules that you need to know – following these rules will SAVE A LOT OF TIME during the college admissions process.

1) Aim for the top 3-5% of your class and you’ll be completely fine. Being valedictorian helps – obviously – but not nearly as much as most people think. There are simply too many valedictorian applicants, and Yale values other areas as much if not more

It all depends on your school, too. If you’re at Stuyvesant, you can be 10% and be fine.

2) As long as your SAT is above 2100, you’re fine. Of course, a perfect SAT score helps. But again – college admissions officers value other areas equally

Please don’t think I’m recommending you just get a 2100. The higher, the better – but at this point, it’s smart to invest your time and energy in other productive areas, like ECs, sports, music, etc

Critical caveat – it’s important that you take as many AP or IB classes as you can. Transcripts are reviewed carefully, and it will hurt if you look like you’re slacking academically. Admissions committees pay attention to these things

Do this, and you’ll have a step up on the admissions competition.

Finally, as I tell everyone and describe in detail in my Hopeless to Harvard book, it’s all about telling a great story. You do this not through your test scores, but through your EC commitments, your essays, and so on.

The key to realising what goes into an academic thesis paper will be how an individual understands the research and writing process in academia. A thesis statement will cover any research that the individual has undertaken and this is the grounding for the writing of the thesis. This thesis will then be submitted to the university to fulfill part of the requirements for the degree.

There are many such topics and subjects that the student can look into and conduct research, whether through an experiment, investigation, or other primary research area. The thesis will be measured for originality, findings and conclusions, as well as whether the paper has been kept within a set word-count that is established by the school, college or university.

The research is considered the main part of the thesis and will start a long time before the student begins to think about a hypothesis. A plan is an important step to ensure that everything will be covered in the research process, and the student should plan the different aspects of their research project to meet the submission deadline.

This research stage of the course, which is when the thesis project is undertaken, is generally towards the end of the course, and on many postgraduate degree courses is the final element. For undergraduates, it will cover the final year of their course and will count heavily to their final degree grade.

Masters’ degrees do require all student to submit a thesis that will contribute between 3% and 18% to the final grading. It will generally take place over the summer term and last some 4 to 5 months. If the student chooses not to complete the thesis then they will not be able to receive a master’s degree.

The thesis project is considered an important and key stage in the student earning their degree, and it is considered a vital and important part to the course. Submission guidelines are fair, but also strict; students will need to adhere to them if they intend to attend graduation.

Many students who complete their thesis project on a higher doctoral degree will be required to attend an interview with the awarding panel to submit a defense from their thesis. This, however, rarely occurs on masters and undergraduate degree courses.

However, all students should be aware that there is a possibility that they will be called on to submit a defense to the panel, even if they are an undergraduate student. They may be asked to defend their research, opinions and conclusions presents, and it will be best for them to present tangible examples when referring to aspects contained in the thesis research paper.

Colleges try to get college students on the grant bandwagon so classes are more affordable- yet surprisingly many college students don’t even try to obtain them. A grant can actually help quite a bit in relieving the financial strain on college students all without them having to pay a dime of the money back. It’ll take some work, but it’s time well spent.

The first person to consult is a counselor at one’s college. University counselors are adept in finding need-based scholarships, loans, and of course government grants. A counselor will point a student in the right direction in getting all the required information to apply, and as students find out it’s quite a bit at that. Knowing test scores, income, tax information, job information, and sometimes even providing a persuasive essay may be required for some types of grants. Some will be more tough to obtain than others.

Some students believe that a government grant will be too small to warrant their effort, and some think they won’t get one at all. The exception to this myth is the Pell grant. The Pell grant is given to almost all who apply, although there are some restrictions included. The Pell grant eligibility and application usually comes from filling out the FAFSA, which will be discussed at a later point. Grants are weighted based on need, but everyone should expect at least something.

A FAFSA is the first thing that should be filled out, and as soon as possible. This application will automatically register an applicant for different loans, work studies, and grants. It will require a lot of information in order to complete, however, so be prepared to do a lot of information searching and spend an hour or two filling it out online.

The university in which a student applies for will also be able to help when it comes to financial aid, such as the case in a work study. While doing a government-approved work study, the university employs a student in exchange for a drastic cut in the tuition of the student. This way the university gets free help, and also helps out students in the area who aren’t afraid to work for their education.

When presented with a government loan, make certain that after your adventure in college that you can secure a job or have money saved up to start paying on loans. Government loans are usually low interest, so they aren’t so bad in terms of paying off, and they also don’t start until school is over. Afterwards, however, they are just like a normal bill and will require periodic payment.

Final Thoughts

Education costs are continually rising as their demand increases as well. To keep financially sound, follow the mentioned tips and get to work at filling out as many financial aid applications as possible.

For numerous teenagers, summer marks the end of the school year and a chance for many to focus on entertainment and recreation. But not everyone can afford to sit idly while summer days pass them by. High school seniors have the daunting task of preparing for a whole new world of work, new social experiences, and branching future possibilities. With the right preparation, any student can maximize their experience and chances of college success.

The transition from high school graduate to college freshman is typically brief. It lasts all of one summer and high school students feel no better equipped to handle the challenges of college life than they did at high school graduation. They are stepping apprehensively into unknown territory with little to no college preparation.

Studying is a prime example of this. Many students accustomed to smaller, informal classroom settings can become overwhelmed with large, impersonal lecture-style classrooms. Suddenly, asking questions in front of an audience of hundreds can be intimidating, and requesting that a professor slow down for note-taking purposes is unlikely. Often students go through trial by fire, making critical errors that can have a lasting effect on their grade point averages.

College summer programs teach students the best way to handle every day occurrences in college life. Problems like challenging classes, more homework, and ineffective studying techniques can often be exacerbated by new experiences like financial pressures and responsibilities, new social situations, and indecision regarding academic career tracts. The approach is usually realistic and grounded in real-life scenarios that the student can relate to.

One college success program, Quantum U, puts a unique spin on the notion of responsibility. The 8 Keys of Excellence, developed by SuperCamp co-founder Bobbi DePorter, carry an overarching message for all students: Success in all aspects of life depends on you. The 8 Keys are comprised of these principles: Integrity, Failure Leads To Success, Speak With Good Purpose, This Is It!, Commitment, Ownership, Flexibility, and Balance. Each of these principles can be applies to a student’s every day life and help them continue to be aware of their actions and the effort put into them.

Another concept Quantum U stands by is Everything Speaks. No matter what a student is doing, the environment they surround themselves in has an inverse affect on their mood, attitude, and the results of what they are trying to accomplish. Consider studying on an organized, orderly desk versus studying on a chaotic mass of papers and books. The results could be wildly different!

Independent studies show that of over 6,000 graduates, 73% reported improved grades, 68% increased motivation, 83% increased confidence, and 98% continued to used the high school and college skills they learned at SuperCamp and Quantum U, which is proof that college preparation can give students a needed edge on their college experience. College success ultimately depends on the student, but they can ease the process by acquiring the skills they need to advance.

Proof of success can be found with past SuperCamp graduates. Megan Adams, a student who attended Quantum U, SuperCamp’s college summer camp, felt her experiences there were invaluable. “[Quantum U] was the most life-changing experience of my life thus far and I have recommended it to all my friends and all my mom’s friends for their kids. I don’t really know that you can completely put into word the amazingness of it… the whole program should be a requirement at some point in all kids’ lives.” Every student should be prepared to take on the world with every tool at their disposal.

by Daniel Z. Kane

Years ago, many highly selective colleges and universities required that all applicants complete an interview with a staff member and/or an alumnus.

Today, far fewer institutions mandate an interview, but a significant number do. And, although other institutions do not use the word “interview”, they may evaluate applicants after meeting with them. In fact, at some institutions, even current students who come into contact with applicants may formally or informally record their opinions of them.

Applicants would be smart to assume that everything they say to any institutional representative may impact his/her admission. That being the case, these basic tips can serve you well.

1. Never indicate that a college or university is a back up choice. Institutions are far more likely to admit a student who is expected to enroll if admitted.

2. Do not express doubt about wanting to continue your education.

3. Dress well for all meetings with institutional representatives. If you think dress does not matter, you are wrong.

4. Read the printed literature and websites of the institutions to which you are sending applications. Do not brand yourself as lazy by asking a question which can be answered after five minutes on the college/university website.

5. Be aware that anything you say, including your comments to student tour guides or interviewers, may influence whether or not you are offered admission.

6. Send thank you notes to anyone who spends significant time with you. The less generic they sound, the better.

7. Feel free to bring immediate family members with you on campus visits. But, be sure they understand that they should not try to “sell” you or speak for you. There are few things admissions personnel or faculty find more objectionable.

8. Have a few well-conceived questions prepared to underline your interest. The critical phrase here is “well-conceived”.

9. Do not hard sell yourself. Humility and self-effacement are valued in the academic community.

10. Meet with representatives of your top choices only after you have had practice with a few of your back up choices. It’s a good strategy.

Essentially, successful interviewing is a combination of good manners, well developed listening skills, reasonable analytical ability, and practice. You can do it.
