The Top 10 Best SNES Games of All-Time

Many game reviewers have created their list of the best SNES games ever. This is another interpretation of the top 10 best SNES games ever created. This list is obviously one author’s opinion, but it is a solid list overall that incorporates many different considerations in the choosing of each game.

10 – Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting – This game gave the Street Fighter characters new color schemes, new special techniques, and additional game speed. The game replaced the need for arcade operators to install various hacks which allowed for increased speed in game play.

9 – EarthBound – Also known as Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back, EarthBound was a role-playing video game for the SNES. The game was a great success in Japan and is considered by critics to be one of the greatest RPGs on the SNES, as well as one of the best RPGs of the 1990s.

8 – Final Fantasy II – By some, the graphics were considered outdated at the time of release. But FFII was praised for its length and bonus content and shipped over 1.28 million copies within five years of its initial release. It is considered one of the best Final Fantasy games and a great Final Fantasy game for the SNES.

7 – Mega Max X – As the second of the Mega Man series, Mega Man X became an incredible success in its own right. It spawned over a dozen follow-up games and spin off games for multiple console platforms. The series and characters remain some of the most popular of all time.

6 – Chrono Trigger – Considered by some to best the best RPG of all time on the SNES, Chrono Trigger has also made the number slot on many other overall lists as well. Its primary competition in the RPG category comes with the Final Fantasy series, specifically Final Fantasy III. But Chrono Trigger is definitely one of the best games of all time on any console.

5 – Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars – This was the first console role-playing game in the Mario series. It is often compared to other RPGs near that time such as Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasy series. Its success has mirrored the success of both of those games as well.

4 – Super Mario World – The best platform game ever created for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The Super Mario series just happens to also be the most popular platform game series ever created. The game has been released multiple times and multiple platforms and sold millions of copies.

3 – Final Fantasy III – Probably the best game of arguably the best RPG series of all time, Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy III had great 2D graphics, an incredible soundtrack, and was a massive success in both Japan and the United states. The game appealed to both hardcore RPG players and newcomers to the RPGs.

2 – Super Metroid – A single-player, action-platform game, Super Metroid was the third installment in the Metroid series. Upon release, it was awarded with Game of the Month, Best Action Game of the Year, and as one of the Best Games of All Time by multiple reviewers.

1 – The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – This game may not be number one on every list of the best SNES games ever, but for any fan of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System it absolutely must make the list. Both the Zelda series and the character of Link remain some of the most popular game icons in video game history. The game is considered to be one of the greatest video games, of any console, of all time.
